Planning Poker ® estimation is used in Agile methodology , for scrum estimations. It’s a variation of Wideband Delphi method. If there are five persons that are involved in estimating , each is given a set of cards. The set consists of a pack of cards , having cards numbered as 0, 1,1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,21, 34, 55, 89, 144 . Each number is found by adding the two numbers prior to it .This sequence is called as Fibonacci number series. Why Fibonacci numbers are used? Fibonacci numbers are used widely , even in stock market predictions . They represent the variation that is invariably encountered in estimations. Its a strange fact that we can get any positive integer by adding up Fibonacci numbers , not repeating them while adding up.

In planning poker estimation technique, a group of people

assemble in a room for estimating .

Each person is given a deck of cards. A person , typically a non-stake holder , acts as the anchor man or moderator , and does not participate in the estimation , but explains each of the story points one by one.

Every story point is associated with multiple tasks like writing code , writing tests, unit tests, functional tests etc.

Any question about the story point is clarified by the product owner and after carefully considering each of the tasks that are associated with the story point , every estimator picks a card that he/she believes to be representing the size of the story point, in ideal days. (As a standard practice, per ideal day is considered as 6 hours , not 8 hours ,per person while estimating) .
